Asian martial arts

In this time, a topic is Asian martial arts.

mainly in China and Japan because I just don’t know all of those.(It’s too many..)

Kung fu, Chinese martial arts

Tai chi, Drunken master, Ip man

In China it call Wushu, it directly translated literally martial arts(武(this letter is arms)術(this is arts)).

Kung fu means hard practice.

Wushu includes so many schools, but the most famous is Taijiquan.

In the morning in China, you can see the slow exercise at public parks.

the movement is originally fast and strong.

The slow type was invented for Chinese emperor in long time ago.

Zui quan(Drunken fist), Baji quan(Eight extreme fist), and Wingchun quan(reading or singing spring fist(directory translated)) are also famous.

and, -Quan means fist.

Zui quan is Jackie Chen’s movie’s one. the movement is drunken person.

Suddenly lying basement, and jumping and kick, like that. The real zui quan don’t drink alcohol of course. It belonged Shaolin and Ditangquan which uses efficiently ground.

Baji quan has the feature attacking by fist and throwing.

Old Taiwan’s leader’s guardman are the master of this fist.

Wing chun quan is famous for Ip man movies these days.

Yipman is real person, one of the greatest marcial art master in 1900s

By the way, China has very big special Wushu school.

Those of children are really amazing…!

Japanese martial arts

Karate, Judo, Aikido, Kendo, and Sumo.

Judo is the sport version of Jujutsu.

Jujutsu is traditional samurai martial arts more brutal than judo. It include kicking and fatal attacks.

Kendo and old one Kenjutsu’s relationship is same.

Kendo only take bumboo blade, but Kenjutsu is attacking blade and sometimes kick the leg and unbalancing opponent.

Kenjutsu training is cutting bumboo with real sword, but Kendo never use real sword.

-do and -jutsu means way.

but nuance is bit different. do is more huristic, jutsu is more practical meaning.

Karate is from Okinawa island. it’s originally from Chinese Wushu.

And Karate go to South Korea, and changing the way nearly totally, it’s Taekongdo.

Sumo is Japanese national art, but almost all people don’t have the experience.

It’s in the middle between sport and ceremony.

There are still traditional strange invisible rules. Sumo wrestler must belong to Sumo dorm and live and eat together. Women mustn’t go the field. Foreigner Sumo wrestler must speak fluent Japanese like natives, and so on.

Muay Thai the Thai martial arts

The feature is elbow an knee attacks.

First Muay Thai legend is the one king use the marcial arts, and beats a lot of enemies.

It becomes to be called Muay Thai afterwards.

India

Kalaripayattu

It’s Kerara’s marcial arts.(where in the most south of India)

The movement is acrobatic, and sometimes using arms.

There are so many people and they have manyt types of martial arts Silambam, Pehlwani, like China.
But sorry, I don’t know so much about Indian martial arts.

South Korea

Taekwondo

It’s very unique marcial art which only uses kicking. It’s mixed of Korean traditonal martial arts and Shotokan style karate. That is why North Korea taekwondo athretes are rare compared with South Korea’s.

Philippines

Eskrima or Kali

It’s very technical stick marcial arts. but I asked it to Philippines friends, they don’t know so much. It may not be famous in Philippines nowadays.
